Low-fat Sweet Dessert
Here is one that is not excessive and will give some anti-oxidants as well.
For this Black and Blue Trifle about 10 sponge finger boudoir biscuits are broken into pieces and arranged into the base of a trifle dish. Make up 1 packet of blackcurrant jelly, and cut into cubes. Pour a layer of jelly over the sponge finger pieces and chill to set slightly. Add 300g of mixed blackberries, blackcurrants and blueberries to the remaining jelly and pour into the trifle dish. Again leave to chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours.
Whip 300ml (1/2 pint) whipping cream with caster sugar to taste, and spread over the top of the set jelly. You can also add a layer of low-fat custard beneath the whipped cream for a more conventional trifle.
GlycoScience is designed to provide information on nutritional saccharides - glyconutrients - that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster's product line. Mannatech includes anti-oxidants in their products. Glyconutrients are essential for optimal health and wellbeing, however they are mostly missing from the modern diet.

Music Therapy
'Music itself, which is used as a support for sound stimulation, calms and makes the subject feel secure and relaxed. It can induce hope, joy, nostalgia, affection, strength, a feeling of power, aesthetic appreciation, etc.
At home, each of us can use the immense resources of music, on the basis of some simple principles I summarise below.
- Organic life is based on rhythms, which means that music can calm or stimulate, harmonise or provoke stress.
- Predominantly rhythmic music stimulates the senses and the physiology, the mode of 'doing', making the body more dynamic (dance music:...)
- Predominantly melodic music stimulates the emotional life and the way of 'feeling' (Romantics; Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, etc)
- Predominantly harmonic music stimulates intellectual life and the way of 'thinking' (classical period: Handel, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn).
- Polyphonic music stimulates fraternal and collective sentiments (popular songs, Basque music, Corsican and Verdi choirs) up to very high-flown sentiments of light, love and joy (Monteverdi, Handel, Vivaldi, etc).
Music is used for relaxation: Moonlight Sonata - promote sleep: Reverie by Schumann....'
Glyconutrients and their corresponding proteins, are essential for cell-to-cell communication. Glyconutrients were the most important health discovery of the 20th century. Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster, are leaders in glyconutrient products for humans providing superior delivery of essential vitamin and minerals and important phytochemicals giving optimal health and wellness.

Natural Beauty of Rural Lifestyle
Looking at all these activities we also need to keep in mind fitness and healthy lifestyle. Whether you are an active person, feeling fatigued or simply have sore muscles, you will benefit from magnesium rehydration.
'Magnesium is required for at least 300 known biochemical reactions including all reactions involving the creation and use of energy. Research has shown that magnesium plays a pivotal role in muscular energy (ATP) production. Magnesium deficiency causes swelling and disruption of the main energy-producing structures with in the cell (the mitochondria).' [Garfunkel L. Magnesium regulation of the glycolytic pathway and the enzymes involved. Magnesium 1985; 4:60-72.]
This can cause exercise-induced muscle damage and can be reduced by magnesium supplementation.
Mannatech Inc. foundered by Sam Caster, produces EM-PACT with Ambrotose complex, which contains magnesium. This product is a workout performance formula for stamina and endurance. It also contains glyconutrients giving the necessary sugars which are necessary for optimal health and well being. Glyconutrients support your body's natural ability to reach optimum nutritional levels and enhance quality of life.

Food and the Microwave Oven
Do you have a problem with using microwave ovens?
I have always been a little hesitant when microwaving food.
On the radio it was stated that there is no proof that microwaves can harm food.
Apparently there is more research in Aussie Health Magazine, 'There are claims that microwaved food is depleted in nutrients or is full of carcinogenic chemicals. In one study (The Lancet, Feb 1990) researchers microwaved milk, and found that one of the proteins changed shape from L-proline to D-proline, which in large concentrations is toxic to the kidneys and liver.
Scientists (Hertel and Blanc, 1992) also found that when eight volunteers ate microwaved food, they showed disturbing changes of blood chemistry - levels of red and white blood cells had decreased while cholesterol values jumped as in low-grade anaemia.
Researchers from Spanish scientific research council, found that cooking by microwave is the worst way to preserve antioxidants in vegetables. By comparison, the loss of these nutrients is minimal when the produce is steamed.'
Some how I think I will keep to steaming my veggies. Hope you do the same.
Adding glyconutrients to your diet has been proved by Mannatech's cutting-edge scientists to be essential giving optimal health and well being. Sam Caster founded Mannatech Inc in 1993 and their flagship product Ambrotose, in 1996, based on the discovery that the body's immune system needs eight plant-based sugars, also known as glyconutrients - to function properly.

Which Bread is Best?
Are you surprised at which bread is best for you?
Whole wheat isn't the healthiest bread for weight loss, according to the Glycemic Index (G.I.). Would you believe pumpernickel has the least impact on blood sugar levels, with sourdough a close second. Here it is: Pumpernickel ... 41 Sourdough .... 52 Rye ... 58 White.... 70 and Whole wheat .... 73
(It looks like I will have to change to pumpernickel or sourdough) For years scientists have debated whether low-fat or low-carb diets are best for taking off and keeping off unwanted kilos. The conclusion?
Neither one .......
A large and growing body of research now reveals that the real issue isn't how much fat or carbohydrate you're eating, but how what you are eating affects your blood sugar. Turns out some foods, like white rice and watermelon, break down quickly, causing sharp spikes in blood sugar. These spikes trigger hunger and cravings, prompting you to overeat. It only gets worse, since blood sugar is a readily available energy source, your body chooses to burn it as fuel, in place of fat. That means you are often not burning fat no matter how hard you exercise, no matter how closely you stick to your diet....'
The G.I. is now a necessity! Sam Caster founded Mannatech Inc in November, 1993 and during its first two years, the company focused on products that contained Aloe Vera extract. Mannatech announced its flagship, Ambrotose in 1996 based on the discovery that the body's immune system needs eight plant-based sugars - also known as glyconutrients also a necessity - to function properly. Mannatech also approved and advocates the Glycemic Index.

How Fresh are Our Waterways?
'From intersex fish in the Potomac River to frog mutations in Wisconsin, federal officials are studying the effects of pharmaceuticals such as pain killers and depression medicine in our water supply.
From inter-sex fish in the Potomac River to frog mutations in Wisconsin, federal officials are spending this summer studying the effects of pharmaceuticals such as pain killers and depression medicine on the environment, because the drugs have turned up in America's drinking water.
The cumulative effect of trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal-care products in the water on humans isn't yet known, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking preventative measures. Pharmaceuticals have already been linked to behavioral and sexual mutations in fish, amphibians and birds, according to EPA studies.
Better sensors have revealed that trace amounts of pharmaceuticals, including narcotics, birth control, antidepressants and other controlled substances, are in the drinking water and in U.S. rivers, lakes and streams. The growing public debate on pharmaceuticals in water will heat up this summer as experts on both sides of the issue try to convince the public that it's either much ado about nothing or another example of humans ignoring early warning signs such as deformed frogs - the amphibian considered the canary in the coal mine when it comes to water issues.
The EPA suspects that part of the problem is consumers flushing old and unwanted drugs down toilets or drains. Americans are taking more drugs than ever - especially the aging baby boomer generation. Pharmaceuticals were found in 80 percent of the samples taken during a U.S. Geological Survey and EPA study of 139 streams in 30 states. Many of America's wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove pharmaceuticals and personal care products, the EPA says.'
This is bad news for our society and is even more reason that all humans could benefit from taking glyconutrients to help counteract the effects of drugs in our waterways. Mannatech Inc. with their great scientists and Sam Caster are a great company giving hope and optimal health by their glyconutrient supplements.

What is Cell-to-Cell Communication?
'The sugar code is the biologic information contained in the sugar chains of glycoproteins and other molecules," say Rob Murray, M.D. It is good to know some of these functions giving rise to new ideas about nutritional and drug approaches to wellness and the disease process.
Keeping in mind that no one is suggesting that glyconutrition is the total solution for counteracting poor diets. There are other important nutrients necessary for health, but it is a vital piece to the wellness puzzle.
'Every cell in our bodies - all 600 trillion of them - are coated with glycoconjugates; a mixture of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. These molecules protrude from the cell surfaces like delicate hairs. Scientists now know that each cell uses the carbohydrates on its surface to communicate - both giving and receiving information about its status. Healthy cell-to-cell communication is the best start to a healthy body.'
'Performing as key actors in all living things, cells play an essential set of roles in our bodies. Cells roam around in our blood, come together to make organs and tissues, help us adjust to changes in the environment and perform a number of other import tasks. Far from being static structures, cells are constantly working, changing sending and responding to chemical cues, even correcting mistakes they make when possible - all to keep our bodies running smoothly.
Carbohydrates are molecules made up of one or more sugars. In the body, carbohydrates can exist independently or be attached to proteins or lipids, and molecular communication codes can be thought of like our written language. Just as four shapes can be combined to make many letters - and these letters can be combined to make a variety of words - the different carbohydrate molecules combine within our bodies to make "words" in cellular jargon. These precisely shaped words protrude from cell surfaces and are recognised and understood - or not - by neighboring cells through their own sense of touch.
Despite our best intentions, most of us are not eating the food elements our bodies need every day. Because of our stressful lives, and our over-reliance on fast foods and quick snacks, our bodies lack the glyconutrients we need.'
Most people only obtain two of the eight essential sugars - glyconutrients - from their diets. Mannatech Inc are the leaders in the glyconutrition. This technology uses plant extracts to enhance cell-to-cell communication and overall physical health. It's a revolution akin to the invention of the personal computer or the digital video disc; the company claims. (Business Week)

Secrets for Massage Success
'This ancient practice of soothing tense muscles, de-stress the mind, relax the body and revive the spirit.
Maintaining a regular rhythm and varying your touch to avoid repetitive or heavy-handed movements which could be painful for the person being massaged. The best way to judge how your massage is being received is to look at the recipient's face. Then you will know whether your are on the right track.
Your comfort is important, too, so wear loose comfortable clothing. Keep your back straight and knees apart if you are massaging a person on the floor. Use the weight of your body to do the hard work and always push away from your body. If you relax, the massage should be as enjoyable to give as to receive. If you are lucky you may be offered one in return.'
For maintaining beautiful bodies, one must also have good nutrition as well as muscle release. 'If you are giving a back massage to someone, make sure their head is supported by folding up a towel and placing it under their forehead. Start the massage with large flowing movements, move on the kneading any tight spots and finish off with light vigorous movements that will leave the recipient tingling.'

High Gylcemic White Potatoes
Most people have heard of the food Glycaemic Index. The rate at which your blood sugar rises after eating is extremely important. When you consume a food with a high-glycaemic index, it causes your blood sugar to rise above normal, and this in turn causes your insulin to rise. This increase of blood sugar has many negative effects above the obvious, such as abnormally increasing your appetite. Sharp sugar spikes result in sharp sugar drops which cause you to crave high-glycaemic, fattening foods.
In Dr. Nugents' book the question is asked "Why are mashed white potatoes slightly lower than baked white potatoes?'
'Simple, these mashed potatoes had some milk added to them and milk contains both fat and protein, which are both 0 Glycaemic(G), so that lowers the total index very slightly. The bottom line, however, is that they are both still high G, regardless, white potatoes are not native to any continent, except America. The English Jamestown colonists brought them back to England as gifts from the Indians along with tobacco. Some gift........... It is almost impossible to find any descendants of the Native Americans who were adapted to the potato, so, for all practical purposes consider them high G for everyone.'
'Yes, I love them too. Everyone I know does. Since I changed my lifestyle to Low G in 1998. I have not eaten one. I miss the aroma, taste, and texture - I love them; but life is full of choices and I choose to live healthy. So I keep low G. You cannot make excuses for unhealthy foods. Ultimately, the choice is yours. I hope you choose wisely.'
Mannatech Inc. provides glyconutrients which occur naturally in many plants. Glyconutrients are not just one of the most recent discoveries, but without question, the most important for supporting human health. Mannatech Inc. produces glyconutrients, antioxidants and their optimal skin care.

Artery Cleanout
This fantastic nutritional powerhouse clears out your arteries... protects against cancer---even prevents birth defects.
Folic acid is a natural food ingredient that medical experts describe as a "nutritional powerhouse". It's a tonic that soothes jangled nerves and unclogs your arteries thus helping you to prevent heart disease and stroke.
Studies show it slashes your risk of many common cancers by 80%! Amazingly, it also protects a woman's unborn child against life-threatening birth defects of the brain and spine. Just imagine how important this is - you can spare your child or grandchild from horrifying birth defects with a simple nutritional supplement that costs but pennies a day!
Yet the vast majority of women do not know this and are leaving themselves vulnerable. Moreover, a woman's need of this nutrient's birth-defect protection is even more pronounced if she consumes alcohol, tobacco, aspirin, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptives, pancreatic extracts, oestrogen, antacids, arthritis drugs such as methotrexata, and medications prescribed for convulsions, malaria, and bacterial infections. Folic acid, a natural food ingredient is a must.
Mannatech's Inc. scientists have produced glyconutritionals, plant sourced multivitamin and mineral supplement, PhytoMatrix, utilising proprietary technology to provide superior delivery of essential vitamin and minerals and important phytochemicals. As well as antioxidants supporting your body's natural ability to defend, protect and repair against stress and premature aging.

The Fat That Loses Weight
Virgin coconut oil is the highest source in nature - other than mother's milk - of lauric acid. Lauric acid is a Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) and an important essential fatty acid for maintaining good health. The MCT's found in 100% organic virgin coconut oil are also important for maintaining healthy cell wall structure. They help to increase metabolism and are easily digested to create a quick source of energy.
What is not well known is that this amazing virgin coconut oil is the first simple step in making radical changes to achieve significant reduction in body fat and weight, without changing the way you eat. Hallelujah! Why haven't we known about this wonder oil before this?
Studies have shown that when oils containing MCT are used in place of fats in the diet people can lose as much as 16kg a year, even when total calorie consumption remains the same!1 So you really can have your fats and lose weight - just make sure they are the right ones.

Resist the Pain in Your Joints
When I think of the many elderly people, over many decades, suffering severely with the agonising pain of arthritis, it is very saddening to know that these people could have had release from pain without taking damaging drugs with their lethal, over time, side effects.
Many doctors now specialise in arthritis remedies bringing fantastic relief to sufferers, halting their symptoms, taking pain away, and restoring their freedom and independence.
Most of us know vitamin C as an immunity booster, doctors have now found that it's also used throughout the body to manufacture collagen. Why is that crucial for arthritis sufferers? Because collagen is the essential building block of cartilage, bone, tendons, and muscles, all necessary to keep hour joints strong and operating smoothly.
Arthritis drugs may stop pain in the short-term, but they do nothing to stop the process of arthritis that's causing pain. Vitamin C, in the right dose, can do this!
My grandmother was right when she insisted in taking cod liver oil triggering near miraculous results. She lived to nearly 93 years old.
Mannatech Inc. produces Glyconutrients, which are plant-based saccharides and are essential in virtually all intelligent interactions between the cells of the body. Glyconutrients affect how our cells form the structure of the body and the daily repair of our tissues. They affect and benefit the immune system giving optimal health and wellness.

Diets, A History Of Failure
"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
George Santayana, Philosopher, poet 1863-1886
So let's learn the history so we don't have to repeat it with our diets.
Here is the Chronology -
- First recorded low carb diet 1860
- First diet movement 1898 (reduced food consumption and increased cereals)
- Low Carbohydrate USA 1960's
- Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution 1972
- American Diet Craze Starts 1972
- Hyperinsulinism and obesity connection, Canada 1979
- Glycemic Index invented, Canada 1981
- Low Fat, USA 1980's
- Low Glycemic, Australia and Canada 1990's
- Low Glycemic, USA 1997 (Harvard Medical School only)
- Low Glycemic makes front page USA Today March 1005
Why do we need a dramatic paradigm shift from old failed methods? Because:
In America there are 295,734,134 million people as of July 2005
- 105 Million have cholesterol above 200 mg/dl (high)
- 73 million have high blood pressure
- 61 million are obese
- 17 million have diabetes
- More than 90 million do not exercise at all
Mannatech inc. is an industry pioneer and world leader in Glyconutrition giving glyconutrition, antioxidants, their GlycoLEAN lifestyle system providing optimal health and wellbeing.

To Eat or Not Too Eat Before Exercise
Eating a small snack about an hour before your workout may help give you energy, as long as it's something high in carbs and low in fat (like a piece of fresh fruit and a mini whole-grain bagel).
Now that we're grown, many of us are still holding on to the notion that we shouldn't eat anything before we exercise. Meanwhile, many of us don't take the time to stop and eat something after we workout either, but should we?
Your body needs fuel (i.e. food) nutrition to make it through your workout, but too much of it can actually slow you down. So when it comes to eating and exercise, timing, quantity and the type of exercise you're doing make all the difference. If you exercise first thing in the morning, get up early enough (two to three hours ahead of time) to eat a full breakfast. If you only have an hour to spare you should still eat something, just make it a light snack.
Experiment with snacks. For some people, a small snack (like a banana) right before, and even during, exercise provides an energy boost. For others, it can make them feel lightheaded. You should do whatever feels good to you.
Mannatech producer of glyconutritionals are leaders in the glyconutrient industry and their product 'Sport" enhances the benefits of exercise by giving optimal wellbeing after workouts.

Skewed Reporting
ABC’s 20/20 story on Mannatech – Why did ABC not finish their investigation on Mannatech?
By Mark Johnson, June 2, 2007
In a November 1998 review by Dr. Freeze and others, he concluded that disorders in
glycosylation are much more common than originally thought and that there is emerging belief
that Diabetes in children is just one such genetic disorder. The authors stated that "the finding
that mannose, but not glucose, corrected glycosylation .... was surprising ... Mannose offers an
attractive therapy because it should be easy to administer and non-toxic ... There is scant
information on the availability of mannose in food, but dietary mannose is probably
insufficient to supply all glycosylation." We all know that these "dietary sugars" are found in
Mannatech's Ambrotose. So why did Dr. Freeze respond as he did? We can only speculate.
The other person touted by ABC as a leading scientist in glycobiology named Ronald Schnaar,
Ph.D. of John’s Hopkins was asked the following question by the ABC reporter: “Is there any
valid scientific evidence that this Mannatech product really works?” Dr. Schnaar responds by
referencing the National Library of Medicine as the main repository of medical knowledge.
Then with intentioned drama, he looks at the reporter and makes a circle
with his right hand and says quite emphatically, "Zero." Well, he is absolutely correct, because
"Ambrotose" is a company brand name. The term "glyconutrients" or “glyco-nutrients” is the
word that Mannatech coined as a new generic term for scientists to use in research papers.
Mannatech filmed the interview between ABC reporter and CEO Sam Caster. To see complete interview, go to http://www.youtube.com/ and enter "Mannatech" in search box.

Stay Well Hydrated
A recent Newspoll study found that 30% of Australians drink just three glasses or fewer a day. Hhydration can lead to symptoms such as headaches, weakness and lethargy, hallucinations, urinary tract infections, kidney stones and, in extreme cases, kidney failure.
Water makes up between 55% to 75% of your total body weight, depending on the ratio of muscle to fat. Muscle tissue holds more water. Adults lose between 2.5 to 3 litres of water every day through normal bodily functions such as perspiration, and more in hot weather or if exercising. Most foods, even those that seem hard and dry, contain wwater. They provide about a litre of the water we need each day. The rest must come from liquids.
Fluids such as juice, soft drinks, coffee, tea, milk and soup can count towards your daily intake, but they also add excess kilojoules so go easy on them. The noticeable rise in the statistics on dental decay, especially among the young, is attributed to bottled water which does not contain fluoride.
Mannatech was founded in November 1993 by current CEO and Chairman Sam Caster. Mannatech's flagship Ambrotose, is based on the discovery that the body's immune system needs eight plant-based sugars - also known as glyconutrients - to function properly.

Beach Experience and Negative Ions
There are those people who believe that negative ions help to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy. It is thought that when they reach our bloodstream a chemical reaction occurs that increases levels of the mood chemical, serotonin.
Again there are those experts who will say that it is all in the mind. However there is some science behind how negative ions work on our health and wellbeing. Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. They are created in nature when air molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, moving air and water.
The feel-good experience, sailing along the water, walking along the beach, in the mountains or under a waterfall, could just be the power of negative ions. Odorless, tasteless, and invisible these negative ions are molecules that we inhale in abundance. The euphoria surrounding these wondrous places, away from the normal pressures of menial life, the fresh air of the mountains and the beach could be just that, or some say, these splendid places of nature contains tens of thousands of negative ions.
'The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions. It can also be seen immediately after a thunderstorm, when people report lightened moods,' says ion researcher Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York.
Glyconutrients are necessary for optimal health and are generally missing from our diets. Mannatech products are at the cutting-edge of nutritional science.

Cut the Risk with Veggies
Prior to handling fruits and vegetables, Linda Harris, Ph.D., a specialist in microbial food safety in the University of California, always washes her hands with warm, soapy water, and makes sure that any cutting boards, colanders, or knives she'll be using are clean. I guess you and I should do the same.
When visiting the markets 'be aware that just as you fondle twelve apples before finding the six you want to take home, so did others,' said Harris. Tumble tender fruits such as strawberries and grapes under cold running water in a colander, and scrub firmer produce (pears, apples, tomatoes) with hands under the running water. Also scrub root vegetables with a clean vegetable brush. Peel and discard the outer leaves of leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce. Harris thinks it's safe to eat 'prewashed' veggies straight out of the bag: these salads are usually prepared in facilities that are cleaner than anyone's kitchen.
Tender fruits and vegetables can be dried with a paper towel which will remove more microorganisms. With fruits and veggies that can take it (apples, carrots, celery), Harris and her colleagues have demonstrated that rubbing produce dry, also dramatically reduces pathogens. "However, don't rub it on your jeans!" she cautions. How many of us have done that?
Even fruits and vegetables with inedible rinds should be thoroughly washed before they're cut, because rinds, especially rough skins, can trap bacteria that a knife blade can transfer to the fruit. Because bacteria can thrive in moist, bruised areas on produce, cut away those spots as soon as possible.
Also trace amounts of bacteria on cut produce can multiply to lethal levels if left at room temperature, so refrigerate cut or sliced fruits and veggies.
Glyconutritionals form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech product line to US Professionals to learn more about safety and effectiveness of nutritional supplements for patients.

Maybe Mars is Too Toxic
Dust storms on Mars appear to be creating a 'toxic snow' of bleach-like chemicals, making life impossible on that planet's surface. Two NASA-sponsored studies have found that the often-seen 'dust devils' and planet-wide storms on Mars could generate a raft of corrosive chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide. Blanketing the Martian surface, these would render the soil sterile.
This new finding might explain the conflicting results when NASA's Viking landers tested Martian soil for sign of life in the mid-1970s. One instrument found nothing. but another recorded that when nutrients were added to Martian dirt, the nutrients were broken down - an indication that microorganisms might be present. But now researchers say that the presence of hydrogen peroxide in Martian soil 'could have fooled the Viking instruments by producing reactions similar to that expected by microorganisms.'
For Christians, the accumulating evidence that life is absent elsewhere and that extra-terrestrial environments are uninhabitable ought to be no surprise. It was the Earth that the Creator formed to be inhabited and it's that the entire heavens will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:7-12).
In is stark contrast, it's no wonder that researchers with an evolutionary mindset continue to eagerly probe for evidence of ET life, believing that if life evolved on Earth, why not elsewhere?
Thankfully we can still get great nutrients on our earth. Even though these days the nutrients are not as good in fruit and vegetables sixty years ago, we do have scientists who have discovered ways of overcoming this clamity. Early research by Mannatech on glyconutrients (the necessary sugars) suggests that by adding glyconutrients to the human diet there is an increase in optimal health and wellbeing.

Natural Healing Secrets
Herbs are the amazing plants that can give wonderful healing and have been used for thousands of years in the past.
Next time you get the flu, try elderberry extract. Scientists have discovered that elderberries contain unique compounds that prevent flu viruses from penetrating your cell membranes. How well does elderberry work?
In Israeli study, researchers gave half the patients elderberry and half a placebo. The results: 90 percent of the people taking elderberry extract were completely better within two or three days! In contrast, the people in the placebo group took a full six days to get well. Elderberry extract is sold in health food stores.
Science has already proven our bodies need glyconutrients. Mannatech is producing glyconutrients and their company is at the forefront of this exciting era of discovery.

Chemicals in Bloodstream
The Observer
Findings have been described as proof that no one is safe from the build-up of harmful chemicals in the environment, even if the actual contamination occurred decades ago.
The precise health implications remain unknown because many of the chemicals have never been tested on humans. In addition, a method for calculating the cocktail effects of chemicals once they are in the bloodstream has yet to be devised.
Michael admitted that his results served as evidence that everybody in Britain was being exposed to chemical contamination, but said the levels were extremely low and should not be a cause for immediate alarm. 'It does demonstrate the range of chemicals to which we are exposed,' he added.
Sir Tom Blundell, the biochemist appointed by Tony Blair to chair the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, warned that Michael's results would fuel a growing consensus that the prevalence of untested chemicals in the environment could become a major public health issue. Blundell said he had repeatedly warned ministers that the issue could become the 'next tobacco'.
'We are conducting a huge experiment on ourselves and I am not surprised that a large number of chemi cals have accumulated in the tissues of Mr Michael,' he said.
One of the substances found in the minister's body belongs to a family of chemicals including perfluorooctane sulphonate, used in chrome plating and fire-fighting foam, which the minister banned only last Tuesday.
Announcing his decision to start phasing out the chemical, which has linked to bladder cancer, Michael described it as a substance that 'presents a real and significant risk to the health of the population and the environment in the UK. I am concerned that a substance with these intrinsic properties is still used.'
Essential glyconutrients are produced by Mannatech providing optimal health and wellbeing for all humans.

How is the Joint Actually Damaged?
When a joint begins to wear out, we know that either the breakdown of cartilage has increased or the production of cartilage has decreased.
That osteoarthritis is an inflammatory disease is a well-known fact. If you observe anyone with arthritic hands, you can actually see how inflamed and swollen the joints of the fingers and hands become. Have you ever wondered what exactly is causing the inflammation and how this leads to damage of the cartilage? The answer is a multifaceted one, because there are actually several sources for inflammation that occur within the joint.
Mannatech originally harnessed the power of glyconutrients in the 1980's that make it possible for everyone to have the key to optimal health.

Pesticides Linked to Parkinson's Disease
COMBINATION OF PESTICIDES LINKED TO PARKINSON'S DISEASE
By Cat Lazaroff
"The environmental reality is that several of these chemicals are used on the same crops and in the same geographical locations. You've got to get rid of the weeds. Then the insects. Then funguses. These are different chemicals that do different things, but they're often applied in the same fields," said Cory-Slechta, who was joined in the research by graduate student Mona Thiruchelvam and faculty members Eric Richfield, Raymond Baggs, and A. William Tank.

Glycomica Listed in Top Ten
The February 2003 ‘Technology Review’, published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has in this months issue (Feb. 2003) a FRONT PAGE article on the ten emerging technologies that are predicted to change the world in the near future, by having such a tremendous influence upon our lives.
These are completely new technologies that could soon transform computing, medicine, manufacturing, transportation, and our energy infrastructure. For each, we’ve chosen a researcher or research team whose work and vision is driving the field. The profiles, on the following pages, offer a sneak preview of the technology world in the years and decades to come.
The Scripps Research Institute Professor Featured in Technology Review as Industry Pioneer in Glycomics is Professor James Paulson, Ph.D. The field Paulson represents, "glycomics," [Glyconutrients] is the scientific pursuit of identifying and studying all of the carbohydrate molecules produced by an organism such as a human or mouse. Like proteomics, the study of all the proteins produced by an organism, glycomics is important for unravelling the mysteries of the recently solved human genome because more than half of all the proteins in the human body have carbohydrate [glyconutrients] molecules attached.
Unlike proteins, which are produced for the most part from a single template, carbohydrates are made by a cascade of chemical reactions inside our bodies. The complex, branched structures of carbohydrates have prevented the development of efficient and routine methods that are key to unravelling the rich information content and biological roles of sugar molecules," Paulson says. Paulson's "Consortium for Functional Glycomics" promises to change that by bringing together a large group of scientists from leading academic centres across the country.
“The Consortium will dramatically accelerate progress in understanding the roles of carbohydrates in cell communication and lead to novel therapeutic approaches for treatment of human disease."

Detoxify and Heal
Cancer will strike 1 out of 3. Cancer cells produce a large number of toxins that inhibit the immune response, and damage tissues. Thus, a spreading cancer becomes more and more difficult to control because of an increased toxin load. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are safe, natural, nontoxic, and effective ways of reducing the toxin load ..
We live in a toxic world with air and water pollution, food and medication additives derived from petroleum and coal tars and other carcinogenic sources. Even drinking water sources, when tested, may show elevated levels of TCE, PCB, chloramines, dioxin and other carcinogenic substances. Many supplemental vitamins, and pharmaceutical drugs are often synthesized from sources such as genetically engineered corn, sugar and many others. (not mine!)
These sources of raw materials are often cheaper than less allergenic sources. Corn allergies constitute one of the most common food allergens in the US. Traces of allergens may cause down regulation of our immune system or a sidetracking of our bodies immune system with a consequential less than optimum immune system to fight cancer and opportunistic diseases and organisms. Cosmetics, food with hydrogenated vegetable oils, pesticides, flea collars, decaffeinated coffee and a host of other daily-encountered substances are carcinogenic!
By detoxification of the body, we can optimize the well being of our healthy cells including our immune system. Everyone has some levels of mutated cells produced daily, however our immune system (when healthy) keeps these abnormal cells in check. Cancer cells and cancer-associated viruses are more likely to mutate and adapt to toxic environments than are healthy cells.
Toxins in our body can accumulate in the subcutaneous fat layer under our skin and in the liver. The liver is an important immune organ and is a source of Kupffer’s cells. These cells filter and destroy foreign bacteria, fungus, viruses, mycoplasma and cancerous cells. It is important to enhance liver function, reduce excessive stress and detoxify this major organ. The Phytochemicals, found in vine-ripened fruits and vegetables, do this.

Study by Histochemical Methods
The carbohydrate deposits detected by histochemical methods in the
molecular layer of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampal formation of
patients with schizophrenia, Down's syndrome and dementia, and aged
person.

Post-mortem brain tissue was obtained from 28 patients with brain
disorders, of which 15 had clinically diagnosed schizophrenia, 6
Alzheimer type dementia, 5 dementia with tangles and 2 cases of Down's syndrome.
The controls were 22 cases from autopsies without brain disorders or with no known episodes of brain disorder. The tissues were stained for the detection of carbohydrate deposits in the hippocampal formation, using lectin, immunohistochemical and conventional staining methods. The staining revealed the existence of spherical deposits in the inner and middle molecular layers of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampal formation which contained fucose, galactose, N-acetyl galactosamine, N-acetyl glucosamine, sialic acid, mannose and chondroitin sulfate. The number of the deposits was higher in patients with brain disorder such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer type dementia, dementia with tangles or Down's syndrome, and in some aged individuals, in comparison to those in younger individuals. No deposits were detected in a few younger or aged individuals. Spherical deposits 3-10 microm in diameter may be an immature form of the corpora amylacea, since they were similar in the histochemical characteristics with lectin, immunohistochemical and conventional staining methods. However, differing staining ability by hematoxylin, periodic acid Schiff's reagent and antibodies against the
intracellular degraded proteins such as ubiquitin and tau-protein was
observed. The antibodies against ubiquitin and tau-protein showed clear
reactivity with the corpora amylacea and no reactivity with spherical
deposits, indicating that the corpora amylacea has an intracellular
origin and spherical deposits an extracellular matrix origin. The results obtained in this study indicate that not only neuronal degeneration but also unusual glycometabolism in neurons may disturb the neuronal function and cause brain disorders, and that spherical deposits may cause dysfunction of the neuronal network in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus which is closely linked with recognition and memory functions. Glyconutrients may increase wellbeing.
Nutraceuticals Improves Treatment Responses
A PILOT SURVEY: STANDARD CANCER THERAPY COMBINED WITH NUTRACEUTICAL DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION IMPROVES TREATMENT RESPONSES AND PATIENT QUALITY OF LIFE. G. Hyland, M.D., D. Miller, M.T., Medcenter One, Dept. Radiation Oncology, Bismarck, North Dakota.
In thousands of cancer cases evaluated by H. Foster, 87% percent of those with "spontaneous remissions" had made major dietary changes prior to tumor regression. The Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994 resulted in millions of US citizens adding a plethora of supplements to their diets. A favorable response by 5 patients that failed all cancer therapy was noted after it was stopped. We found that they had consumed glyconutrient, phytonutrient and phytogenin containing dietary supplements.
A search revealed that Dr. Busbee et. al 1994 found a glyconutrient in these diet supplements increased IL-1, IL-6, INF and TNF production in monocyte cultures. Dr. See et. al 1999 reported enhanced NK lymphocyte cytolytic function in response to multiple glyconutrients. Dr. Barhomi et. al 1997 found glyconutrients increased intracellular reduced-glutathione protection 50% in liver cells. Such activity provides a potential differential effect for tumor cell destruction and normal cell protection.
To increase our observations, patients with malignancies were solicited from a 3 state area and 127 volunteered to add nutraceuticals to their diet. 100 patients returned a quality of life survey focusing on weight loss, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pain control, ability to complete treatments on schedule, physical activity and sense of well being. 40% of the group had failed standard therapy and were in a state of progressive disease (sent home to die). 60% were starting radiation or chemo-therapy. 85% reported improvements in the above clinical parameters.
The phytogenin supplement contains plant sterols for nutrient based endocrine support. Ovarian, breast, uterine, and prostate malignancy patients were discouraged from taking this nutrient. Some elected to add the phytogenin to their diet and they reported the best preservation of appetite, muscle mass, and had the least side-effects during treatment. Patients with a diagnoses of ovarian carcinoma, astrocytoma grade IV, lymphoma with mild marrow suppression, a massive pelvic myxosarcoma, and colon adenocarcinoma with brain metastasis had unprecedented responses.
CONCLUSIONS: Nutraceutical dietary supplements:
1. Do not inhibit tumor cell destruction by radiation and chemotherapy
Enhance tumor cell destruction
Protect normal cells from radiation and cytotoxic damage
Induce reductions in tumor mass in malignancies resistant to all treatments
Improve quality of life for patients by reducing treatment toxicity and side effects from radiation and chemotherapy. A formal, controlled clinical study is warranted to further evaluate the effects of nutraceutical dietary supplementation in combination with standard cancer therapy.

New Drugs Will Be Labelled "Dangerous"
Alternative Glyconutrients complement wellbeing.
Sweet Medicine
Scientific American then goes on to say that "scientists of the past did not neglect sugars from lack of interest", but the "problems stemmed in large part from the extraordinary structural variability of sugars." And further the "alphabet" with the "simplest sugars in the body can theoretically assemble into more than 15million four component structures".
Glycoscience is advancing rapidly.
Health Care Professionals
More than 200 doctors and healthcare professionals attended the 6-day medical cruise in the Caribbean, which offered more than 36 hours of continuing medical education (CME) training. Dr. Boyd spoke on the topic “Glycobiology, The New Frontier”. Other courses covered a broad spectrum of complementary and alternative therapy topics including women’s health, detoxification, drug/herb interactions, and drug depletion of nutrients.
“The interchange between complementary and mainstream medicine is steadily increasing,” Dr. Boyd commented. "Carbohydrate technology represents one of the next frontiers in medicine both in terms of drug development and in terms of the glyconutrients that Mannatech researches and develops. Integrative medicine is the future and I believe that glyconutrients will find growing acceptance in complementary care programs. It is important for doctors to explore complementary care options that can make the quality of life better for their patients. ”
Dr. Boyd completed his BS and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry at the University of Glasgow, Scotland and in 1974, graduated with a M.D. degree from the University of Toronto, followed by training in Family Practice. He spent fifteen years in medical practice as a family physician, both in Canada and the US.
Dr. Boyd is currently a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Wound Management. In 2001, he was honored by being elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM).
